Project Overview
Location: Jiaxing, Zhejiang Province, China
Project: Jiaxing Tramway Phase I
Route Length: 13.8 km
Key Focus: Station Platform Design, Modular Solutions, Urban Integration
As the first tramway system in Zhejiang Province, the Jiaxing Tramway Phase I project is a major milestone in the city's public transportation development. Connecting Jiaxing South Railway Station with Jiaxing Railway Station, the 13.8-kilometer line links the high-speed rail hub with the urban core.
ZEMSO Group participated in the construction of this landmark project, contributing to station platform solutions tailored to complex urban conditions. The project received the prestigious Tien-yow Jeme Civil Engineering Prize, recognizing its comprehensive engineering achievements.
Engineering Challenges and Solutions
Approximately 9.8 kilometers of the route passes through Jiaxing's old urban area, involving 49 intersections, 16 bridges, more than 200 utility relocation points, and over 8,000 foundation piles. Soft soil, existing buildings, and busy roads added further complexity.
To address these challenges, ZEMSO applied an integrated approach combining design, modular solutions, manufacturing, and on-site installation.
Urban-Integrated Design: Station platforms were designed to meet transportation requirements while complementing Jiaxing's distinctive Jiangnan water-town character.
Modular Design: Platform structures and components were divided into manageable sections to accommodate different site conditions and simplify transportation, assembly, and installation.
Coordinated Implementation: Manufacturing and on-site installation were aligned with individual station requirements and the broader construction schedule.
Long-Term Durability: Structural reliability, manufacturing quality, and maintenance needs were considered to support continued outdoor use and daily passenger activities.
Project Impact
The tramway entered operation in June 2021, with its demonstration section progressing from construction commencement to operational readiness in just 13 months.
Improved Urban Connectivity: The line connects two major railway stations, strengthening links between the high-speed rail hub and central Jiaxing.
Enhanced Public Spaces: Integrated station design helps public transportation facilities fit into the urban landscape while supporting passenger waiting and daily travel needs.
Support for Urban Development: Better connections between key destinations provide infrastructure that supports urban renewal, tourism, and local economic activity.
Engineering Value: ZEMSO's participation demonstrates how modular design and coordinated implementation can help translate complex engineering plans into practical public transportation facilities.
Conclusion
The Jiaxing Tramway Phase I project demonstrates how modern transit infrastructure can be integrated into an established city through thoughtful design and coordinated construction.
Through its participation, ZEMSO contributed to station platform solutions that address site-specific engineering challenges while supporting urban integration and long-term public use.
Beyond the 13.8-kilometer line, the project creates lasting value by improving transportation connectivity, enhancing the public environment, and supporting Jiaxing's continued urban development.
