Recently, the Shanghai ZEMSO participated Shanghai Railway Station Area Party and Community Service Station was officially put into operation. Built around an innovative integrated service space, the station combines Party and community services, public convenience services, volunteer services, and urban governance functions. It creates an innovative comprehensive service hub in the Shanghai railway transportation hub area, bringing new vitality to urban public service scenarios.
Showcasing Shanghai’s Image Through Design
As an important transportation gateway to Shanghai, Shanghai Railway Station handles a large daily flow of passengers while connecting people with the city.
For this project, ZEMSO fully incorporated Shanghai’s regional cultural characteristics, integrating the city’s identity with the public service space. Inspired by Shanghai’s city flower, the Magnolia, the exterior combines petal-inspired forms with modern architectural language, complemented by transparent glass curtain walls.
While meeting functional requirements, the design reflects Shanghai’s open, inclusive, and modern urban character.
The Magnolia-inspired form not only enhances the station’s visual identity but also transforms a functional public facility into a distinctive urban landmark within the Shanghai Railway Station area.
Creating a Comprehensive Smart Service Station
Unlike traditional service booths with a single function, the Shanghai Railway Station Area Party and Community Service Station integrates multiple scenarios through spatial and functional planning, bringing together four key functions: Party and community services, integrated grid-based community coordination, civic cultural services, and volunteer services.
The Party and community service area supports Party-related communications, red culture displays, and services for mobile Party members. The integrated grid coordination area supports information exchange within the station area and grassroots urban governance. The civic cultural service area provides urban culture promotion and public cultural services for passengers arriving in or departing from Shanghai. The volunteer service area provides wayfinding consultation, bilingual assistance, wheelchair support, and other convenient services, while continuously expanding its travel-related service capabilities.
To address the needs of different users and scenarios, ZEMSO planned the station’s spatial layout, functional zones, and facility configuration from the perspective of actual public-space usage, enabling multiple service functions to operate efficiently within a limited space.
The station is also equipped with smart display screens, bilingual wayfinding machines, drinking water facilities, charging services, seating, and other convenient amenities. These features make information access, service consultation, and daily use more convenient while providing a stable and efficient spatial platform for public services.
The goal is to make the station more than simply “functional”—it becomes a meaningful connection between people and the city.
Turning Public Space into a Warm Gateway to the City
As a service node within a major transportation hub, the Party and Community Service Station provides more than basic functions such as passenger consultation and rest facilities. It also serves as an important link between urban governance and the needs of citizens.
Starting from the development of public spaces, ZEMSO integrates functional requirements with the surrounding urban environment and local culture, exploring new forms of service spaces for transportation hubs.
The project achieves a natural integration between public service facilities and the urban environment, allowing a compact service space to meet everyday needs while also becoming an important platform for showcasing the city’s image and delivering a sense of care.
From a simple service booth to a comprehensive service hub, the Shanghai Railway Station Area Party and Community Service Station represents an upgrade of public facilities—from a “basic functional space” to a “gateway to urban services.” It creates a more convenient and welcoming connection between passengers, citizens, and the city.
For years, ZEMSO has continued to explore new ways to integrate smart technology with urban public spaces. Through products such as smart bus shelters, smart benches, smart wayfinding systems, and urban furniture, ZEMSO provides cities with smarter, more convenient, and visually integrated public service facilities.
The Shanghai Railway Station Area Party and Community Service Station is another innovative practice by ZEMSO in the field of smart urban furniture.
Looking ahead, ZEMSO will continue to respond to evolving urban needs, empower spaces through design, enhance services through technology, and explore new scenarios where public facilities and urban governance can work together.
The goal is to turn every urban node into an important window that connects people with the city and delivers a sense of warmth.
One service station connects urban services. One space conveys the warmth of the city. ZEMSO — making urban public spaces smarter and better.
